By developing software that generated random ICC-IDs, the hackers attempted to match these with legitimate identifiers. When successful, they accessed pre-filled email addresses associated with those ICC-IDs.

AT&T described the hackers' efforts as deliberate, involving a program that randomly generated potential ICC-IDs to harvest customer emails. The group then compiled and shared this data publicly for recognition.

The incident has prompted an investigation by the FBI, which began examining the case last Thursday. AT&T has committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible for unauthorized access.
