Instead, they notified third parties who then alerted AT&T, allowing the company time to patch the vulnerability before the information was publicly disclosed. In contrast, AT&T's recent communication portrayed Goatse Security's actions less favorably. They explained that on June 7, hackers exploited a function designed to streamline the iPad login process. By developing software that generated random ICC-IDs, the hackers attempted to match these with legitimate identifiers. When successful, they accessed pre-filled email addresses associated with those ICC-IDs.

AT&T described the hackers' efforts as deliberate, involving a program that randomly generated potential ICC-IDs to harvest customer emails. The group then compiled and shared this data publicly for recognition.

The incident has prompted an investigation by the FBI, which began examining the case last Thursday. AT&T has committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible for unauthorized access.

Responding to the company's statements, security researcher Escher Auernheimer criticized AT&T's handling of the situation. He suggested that the extensive email notifications sent to subscribers indicate a lack of proper logging and understanding of the breach's scope. Auernheimer argued that if third parties had not disclosed the exploit, AT&T might never have addressed the vulnerability, leaving users at risk of malicious exploitation.

He emphasized the importance of immediate disclosure once a fix is in place, criticizing delays that could give criminal groups an opportunity to exploit residual data. Auernheimer maintained that his group acted responsibly by disclosing the flaw only to a journalist and destroying the data afterward, asserting their actions were ethical and aimed at protecting users.
