Beyond the drivetrain, innovation is focused on industrializing the entire offshore system. This includes optimizing the entire logistics chain—from specialized vessels for transporting and installing the colossal DD nacelles and rotor blades, to developing standardized, serial-produced floating foundations. Significant R&D is also focused on advanced electrical systems, where the DD turbine’s full-power converter is integral to managing the immense power output and ensuring stable grid connection, even during turbulent wind events. This includes providing critical grid-forming capabilities.


Ultimately, the goal of offshore wind innovation is to achieve Cost Parity with Conventional Power Sources. The technical advantages and high capacity factors afforded by large-scale DD turbines, combined with advancements in installation and foundation design, are key to driving down the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). The continuous refinement of DD technology, therefore, is not merely a component improvement, but a systemic innovation that underpins the long-term, large-scale viability of offshore wind as a global energy source.
