Its protective function is to cushion the cells from mechanical stress, seal the cells from air and moisture (preventing oxidation and corrosion), and optically bond the cells to the glass, maintaining high light transmission efficiency.

The reverse side protection is provided by the Backsheet (or rear glass in bifacial modules). The backsheet is the critical rear barrier. Its essential protective functions are threefold: Electrical Insulation (preventing dangerous short circuits between the high-voltage cells and the aluminum frame/mounting structure), Moisture/Water Vapor Barrier (stopping atmospheric moisture from reaching the sensitive cells and interconnects), and UV Protection (shielding the inner encapsulant and cells from the rear-side UV light that can penetrate through the edge of the panel).

Finally, the Aluminum Frame provides peripheral protection by preventing moisture ingress along the module edges and providing a robust, structural mounting point. The collective performance of these protective layers is what defines the long-term weatherability and reliability of the solar panel. Failure in any one of these layers—such as backsheet cracking or encapsulant yellowing/delamination—can compromise the entire protective system, leading to cell degradation, power loss, and potential safety hazards. The engineering of these layers represents the direct link between material science and the economic viability of solar energy.
